What are digital nerves?
Digital nerves are nerves that travel from the palm to the tips of the fingers and thumb. They can be damaged by pressure, stretching or cutting.
What are the digital nerves of the hand?
Each common palmar digital nerve runs towards the cleft between the index and middle fingers, and the middle and ring fingers. Then they split into 2 proper digital nerves, to the adjoining sides of the 2nd to 4th digits [1-3].
What are common digital nerves?
Common digital nerves
- Common palmar digital nerves of median nerve.
- Common palmar digital nerves of ulnar nerve.
- Common plantar digital nerves of lateral plantar nerve.
- Common plantar digital nerves of medial plantar nerve.
Are digital nerves sensory or motor?
The sensory branch divides in the midpalm into common and proper digital nerves, which supply sensation to the ulnar side of the ring finger and the small finger. The deep motor branch innervates the intrinsic muscles of the hand. At the finger level, the digital nerves run volar to the digital arteries.
Can a digital nerve heal on its own?
Injured or severed digital nerves will not heal without treatment. If left alone, the nerve endings can form painful and highly-sensitive neuromas, and finger sensation may be completely gone.
How long does it take for a digital nerve to heal?
A nerve takes time to recover, and this be up to three to six months for a digital nerve. You will have a small surgical wound with stitches, and this will be covered by a dressing initially. Your stitches will normally be removed 10-14 days after surgery by a nurse at your GP practice or in the Hand Therapy unit.
Is the radial digital nerve a peripheral nerve?
The peripheral nerves of the hand include the median nerve, the ulnar nerve, and the sensory branch of the radial nerve.

Where are digital nerves?
In the upper extremity, the digital nerves arise from the median, ulnar, and radial nerves. The 2 palmar digital nerves innervate the palmar aspect of the digit and the nail bed, whereas the dorsal nerves innervate the dorsum of the digit (see images below).
What are digital veins?
The palmar digital veins (or volar digital veins) on each finger are connected to the dorsal digital veins by oblique intercapitular veins….

What does digital nerve innervate?
Each digit is innervated by 4 digital nerves. In the upper extremity, the digital nerves arise from the median, ulnar, and radial nerves. The 2 palmar digital nerves innervate the palmar aspect of the digit and the nail bed, whereas the dorsal nerves innervate the dorsum of the digit (see images below).
How long does digital nerve repair take?
The recovery time for nerve repair is varied, as nerves take much longer to heal than skin or muscles. It usually takes about 3-4 weeks before the nerves really begin to heal.
What is the function of radial nerve?
The radial nerve provides motor (movement) and sensory functions to the arm. It: Stimulates muscles so you can straighten and raise your elbows, wrists, hands and fingers. Provides touch, pain and temperature sensations to portions of the back of the upper arm, forearm, and to the back of the hand and fingers.
Where is Digital vein located?
Description. The palmar (volar) digital veins on each finger are connected to the dorsal digital veins by oblique intercapitular veins. They drain into a venous plexus which is situated over the thenar and hypothenar eminences and across the front of the wrist.
Where is the digital veins?
Description. The dorsal digital veins pass along the sides of the fingers and are joined to one another by oblique communicating branches. Those from the adjacent sides of the fingers unite to form three dorsal metacarpal veins which end in a dorsal venous net-work opposite the middle of the metacarpus.
Where is the common digital nerve?
In the palm of the hand the median nerve is covered by the skin and the palmar aponeurosis, and rests on the tendons of the Flexor muscles.
