How long should I spend at the Cloisters?
It takes two to three hours to do the Cloisters justice. Take your time, don’t cut corners. Walk leisurely through the cloisters, sit on the terrace, and finish with a walk through Tryon Park.

The buildings are centered around four cloisters, which were brought over from Europe right before World War II. It’s peaceful just to walk around outside admiring the architecture and views.

Why are the cloisters called The Cloisters?
The museum was designed by architect Charles Collens and opened in 1938. It takes its name from elements of five medieval French cloisters that have been incorporated into the building design and serve as connecting points between the various galleries.
