What is ellaOne 30mg used for?
ellaOne is a contraceptive intended to prevent pregnancy after unprotected sex or if your contraceptive method has failed.
How effective is ellaOne 30mg?
It is 98% effective regardless of when it is taken, up to 5 days after unprotected sex. You can take EllaOne at anytime in your cycle and it is suitable for women of child-bearing age and for adolescents. EllaOne can only be used in a menstrual cycle and should not be used as a regular form of contraception.
How quickly does ellaOne work?
In a clinical trial, ellaOne® has been shown to reduce the rate of pregnancy to just 9 in 1000 when taken within 24 hours of unprotected sex. This is because of the active ingredient ulipristal acetate, which has been shown to be 2.5 times more effective than other morning after pills containing levonorgestrel.

ellaOne can be taken up to 120 hours (five days) after having unprotected sex, and it’s 98% effective.
What happens after taking ellaOne?
After taking the tablet, it is normal for your next period to be a few days late. However, if your period is more than 7 days late; if it is unusually light or unusually heavy; or if you experience symptoms such as abdominal (stomach) pain, breast tenderness, vomiting or nausea, you may be pregnant.
Can you get pregnant after taking ella?
EllaOne continues to be effective a little later in the cycle. A 2017 review of the evidence estimated that around 1 to 2% of women who take ellaOne after unprotected sex will become pregnant. In comparison, it’s estimated that 0.6 to 2.6% of women who take Levonelle after unprotected sex will become pregnant.
Is ellaOne an abortion pill?
No. Your chances of becoming pregnant will return rapidly after use of ella® for emergency contraception. ella® is not a regular contraceptive pill, so it will not protect you against future acts of sexual intercourse.
How do I know if ellaOne has worked?
You will know if ellaOne has worked if your next period arrives. As mentioned above if it is more than 7 days late, unusually light or heavy, you experience symptoms such as abdominal (stomach) pain, breast tenderness, vomiting or nausea, you may be pregnant. You should do a pregnancy test right away.
Does ellaOne work if you’ve already ovulated?
EllaOne contains ulipristal acetate and is licensed to be taken within 120 hours (5 days) of unprotected sex. Both Levonelle and ellaOne are effective only if taken before the release of an egg from the ovary (ovulation). The sooner you take Levonelle or ellaOne, the more effective it will be.
