Their manor at Bewdley is first mentioned by that name (thought to stem from ‘Beaulieu’ in French and meaning ‘beautiful place) in the late 13th century. It certainly had a ferry by 1336 (probably earlier), an official market by 1376 and it rapidly developed as an inland port.
