How long does Propess take to start contractions?
How long will it take? Once the Propess has been inserted Prostaglandin is slowly released over 24 hours and acts in a similar way to the hormone that your body produces when you go into labour naturally.
How many Propess can you have?
No studies in multiple pregnancy have been performed. PROPESS should be used with caution when the woman has had more than three full term deliveries. No studies in woman with more than three full term deliveries have been performed.
Can Propess start contractions?
If you have been given PROPESS for a longer time than you should it may lead to increased contractions or the baby may become distressed. The PROPESS vaginal delivery system will then be taken out immediately. Like all medicines, PROPESS can cause side effects, although not everybody gets them.
How do I know if induction pessary is working?
If your cervix has opened up to at least 2-3 centimetres dilated and the baby’s head is well engaged (low down in your pelvis), your waters will be broken (see below under Artifical Rupture of Membranes). If it is not possible to break your waters a second Propess pessary may be inserted if appropriate.
Does a pessary work straight away?
If you have a controlled-release pessary inserted, it can take 24 hours to work. If you aren’t having contractions after 24 hours, you may be offered another dose. You may need a hormone drip to speed up the labour.
How long does it take for Propess pessary to work?
If there are concerns you will be asked to come back to the maternity unit where you will be met and assessed by a midwife. What happens if my labour starts within 24 hours of the pessary being inserted? Approximately 75-80% of women will have given birth within 24 hours of having Propess inserted.
How do I get Propess to work?
The slow-release pessary, Propess, looks a bit like a tampon. If you’re given Propess, you have to lie on your side for 30 minutes so the pessary has time to absorb moisture and swell . You’ll then be able to move about. While you wait for prostaglandins to work you can usually go for a walk.
