How does Alko Stabiliser work?
The old Westfalia and the modern AL-KO/Winterhoff stabiliser hitch heads all work on the same principle. The tow ball clicks into the place and you then push down the clamp handle which forces friction pads against the tow ball. Typically, this will be two friction pads on either side of the tow ball.
When should Alko friction pads be replaced?
If they’re below the recessed area or within it, the side pads are fine. If they’re above it, the pads are worn and must be replaced. Look at the front of the stabiliser handle. If you see the green plastic segment below the red one (not the button on the front of the hitch), the front and rear pads are fine.
Why does my Alko hitch creak?
Most likely cause is the stabiliser pads have become contaminated with dirt. Clean tow ball and inside of hitch head with brake cleaner and a clean rag or wad of kitchen roll and see if that helps.
How does a caravan damper work?
The coupling damper has a shock-absorbent effect, reducing the ‘bouncing’ of the sprung drawbar. If the spring is too strong and the damper too stiff, the brakes could fail to operate with sufficient force to bring the caravan to a safe stop.
How do I check my caravan damper?
Try to push the coupling back into the A frame, a lot of resistance should be felt (if you can move it at all) and if you do manage to push it in, it should slowly return to its original position by itself. If it slides in and out very easily, or stays in when pushed in you need a new one.
How do you clean Alko friction pads?
Gently rub the concave surface of the friction pads with a fine grade emery paper. This will remove residue from the surface and prolong friction pad life. We recommend cleaning friction pads in this way before or after every journey to maximise their efficiency.
How do I stop my trailer ball from rattling?
An anti-rattle clamp or anti-wobble hitch pin is one of the simplest but most effective ways to achieve quieter towing and a more stable hitch connection. An anti-rattle installs tightly against the shank to keep it from vibrating inside the receiver.
