Does trample work against protection?

Yes. If you attack with 7/7 green creature with trample, and they block with a 2/2 protection from green creature, it will assign damage equal to that creature’s toughness (2) to the creature, and the other 5 will trample over to the player.

How does protection work vs trample?

Protection from a color prevents all damage assigned to a creature. Since during the damage assignment, the attacker only needs to assign lethal damage to the creature before being able to assign trample damage to you.

Does trample go over protection from a color?

Title says it all, if a card has protection from colour would a creature with trample still damage the player. When assigning Combat Damage, you only look at what damage has already been marked on the Creature, and any damage being simultaneously assigned by other Creatures.

Does trample go over indestructible?

Even though an indestructible creature isn’t destroyed by lethal damage, that definition is still used for things like assigning trample damage. If a creature with lethal damage on it stops being indestructible, it’s destroyed the next time state-based actions are checked.

Can I block a creature with protection?

As you noted, a creature with protection from something can’t be blocked, targeted, dealt damage, enchanted, or equipped by anything that has that “something” quality. That quality is usually one or more colors.

How does protection work in Magic The Gathering?

A creature with protection from one or more colors of magic cannot be affected by any magic of those colors. For example, a creature with protection from blue cannot be blocked by blue creatures, dealt damage by blue creatures, or enchanted, damaged, or otherwise affected by blue cards.

Does protection prevent board wipes?

Protection stops damage, enchanting/equipping, blocking, and targeting. It doesn’t do anything against any other kinds of effects. So what is the board wipe in question doing? If we’re looking at your typical white wrath effect like Shatter the Sky or Doomskar, then protection won’t do anything.

Does Deathtouch cancel trample?

All damage is resolved. This includes the damage dealt to and by Deadly Recluse, and the trample damage to you. Because the creature with trample took damage from Deadly Recluse, it dies, no matter what it’s toughness is (see rule 704.5h.

It doesn’t do anything against any other kinds of effects. So what is the board wipe in question doing? If we’re looking at your typical white wrath effect like Shatter the Sky or Doomskar, then protection won’t do anything.

Does protection work against counters?

Something with protection can still be countered. Something with “can’t be countered” can still be targeted. Abilities of permanent cards normally only work when the object is on the battlefield [CR 112.6]. But you can’t counter something on the battlefield.

Can you destroy a creature with protection?

Yes, Day of Judgement will destroy a creature with Protection from White.
