How do Bonzer surfboards ride?
According to Malcolm, the Bonzer’s primary purpose is to efficiently direct water flow. The fins and bottom contours work together so that water can move diagonally across the board. When this happens, the outside fins deflect water down and back through the tail.
Where should fins be placed?
Single fins positioned towards the rear of the board allow for more drive, speed, and stability. A single fin placed farther back will be harder to turn quickly, but is perfect for down the line drive and nose-riding.
What is a bonzer fin?
The traditional bonzer is designed to surf as a single fin, with long, low profile side fins that are set at a deep angle. The side fins act as an extension to the concave. The result is extra drive and speed that is typically lost by a single fin.
Where should fins be placed on a longboard?
Position the fin forward (towards the nose of the board) and you will get a looser feel through the tail. Position the fin back (towards the tail) to get more hold and control.
What do side bite fins do?
Using the fins as sidebites on your longboard adds drive and stability to your single-fin setup. Or turn your THRUSTER setup into a QUAD, using these as the rear trailer fins, also adding more drive and power.

What type of wave is Bonzer?
What type of waves does it perform best in, and what style of surfing? Malcolm: The aim of the Bonzer is to have a versatile board with the optimum combination of speed and maneuverability in any situation. The Bonzer three- and five-fin and bottom design works well in any type of surf.
What’s a Bonzer surfboard?
Surfboard design introduced in 1972 by Malcolm and Duncan Campbell of Oxnard, California. The bonzer was one of the first boards to use three fins: a pair of toed-in, keel-like side fins, located in front of a standard center fin. The board also had two parallel concaves down the bottom rear half of the board.
Where do you put the fin box?
On longer boards with a single center fin or 2+1 set up, you’ll often find the center fin box placed about 5” to 5 ¾” from the tails. Sidebites are then place about 15-16” off the tail. On twin fins, you’ll likely find the fins placed anywhere from 6 ½” to 10 ½” off the tail.
