Do you need studded tires on a fat bike?
Some people will tell you they’re absolutely necessary. Others, like myself, say they’re not necessary. If you’re a strong rider you can definitely go without them. However, if you do ride in constantly icy conditions or want extra piece of mind, studded fat bike tires give you an extra level of security.
Do you have to break in studded tires?
With the stud inserted, the tread rubber compresses around the stud’s flat head and cylindrical housing to hold it in place. Because it takes some time for the lubricant to evaporate and the tread rubber to securely compress around the stud, new studded tires require a break-in period.
Can you stud all tires?
Only new tires that have never been driven on can be studded. Tires already driven on cannot be studded nor re-studded. This practice risks serious tire damage resulting from incorrect stud lengths and/or unseen debris (sand, cinders, salt or stones) becoming trapped under the stud in the molded hole.
What is the best wheel size for a fat bike?
An 80mm rim is pretty standard for stock fat bikes these days. If there is a “standard” fit tire width, we’d say it is in the 3-to-4-inch range. The equates to roughly 80-100mm tire, as you might often see them referred to.
Are studded tires good on ice?
Studded tires provide the best traction you can get, even when you’re encountering ice or packed snow. Studs are lightweight, small metal spikes that are staggered across the tread. They help break through packed snow and ice-covered roads to give you better traction.
Are wider bike tires better for snow?
Wide tires tend to gather snow in their treads, which inevitably end up becoming slick, hard rocks as a result. The skinny tire will cut through the snow far better than its wider companion. By cutting through the snow faster, the tire will be able to grip the ground below sooner.

A fatter tire is more resistant to both pinch and puncture flats. A larger tire will also have softer ride (due to lower pressure) and better traction due to more tire in contact with the road.
How long will studded tires last?
Snow tires are designed for the best possible performance on Canada’s wintry roads, with studded tires providing the best traction on ice. Whether you own premium or lower-budget tires, most should last five or six seasons. However, that can change depending on your driving and tire maintenance practices.
Are skinny bike tires better for snow?
Fat: You can float on top of the snow and you don-t have to go through it. You have a larger contact patch with the ground. Skinny: Will find it’s way through the snow to find some pavement to grab onto. Studded: Works great on ice but has no effect on snow/slush/other stuff.
How wide should bike tires be for snow?
Narrower tires are best suited to groomed snow riding and racing, touring desert tracks, or lighter riders who require less flotation. The widest tires mounted to 100mm rims are best for soft snow, backcountry beach and desert expeditions, or larger riders who need a little more support.
