How does a 2 stroke reed valve work?
Reed valve allows the mixture to move in only one direction – from the carburetor to the crankcase. It prevents the mixture from moving back to the carburetor. In the effect reed valve improves reloading of the combustion chamber with fresh air-fuel mixture. This improves power output of modern two stroke engines.
What causes a reed valve to open and close?
As the piston moves upwards in the cylinder a low pressure (vacuum) is created in the crankcase. This vacuum causes the reed valve to open and the air fuel mixture to enter.
How can you check the condition of a reed valve without removing the carburetor and the valve?
Use a piece of clear plastic tubing for a stethoscope and put it down into the throat. On a good reed valve, you will here a single air intake event per crank rotation. With a bad one, you will hear what sounds like breathing in and out with two air movements per crank cycle.
How can you tell if a reed is bad?
A “bad” reed is too soft or too hard for you, or dead sounding. This can often only be obvious after a while, maybe 30 minutes, maybe an hour of playing. Sometimes a good reed turns bad suddenly, sometimes bad reeds get better.
What will bad reed valves do?
A leaky reed valve body (not leaky petals) can lean out the fuel mixture, may cause overheating, and/or may result in stall at full throttle. It is a particularly bad problem for paramotors that have an internal pulse port because a leak will affect the internal fuel pump in the carburetor.
When should you throw out a reed?
For those just starting out, reeds can last up to six months. Once you play and practice more frequently, this “cycle” can take anywhere from 2-4 weeks. Once you become more comfortable with the clarinet, you’ll have a general idea of when you should be replacing your reeds.
How do I know if I need a new reed?
If you’re noticing that the tip of your saxophone reed is chipped, it may be time for a replacement. In some cases, chipped tips won’t affect playing, while in other instances chipped reed tips will make the reed completely unplayable. To verify the extent of the damage, observe where the tip is chipped.
