Can you have different size drives in a NAS?
If you dont want any redundancy (and the os allows it) you could put disks of different sizes in and concatenate the storage. If you want to use mirror the disks (raid 1) then you can probably use different size disks but you will only get the total capacity of the smallest disk.

Three drives is the minimum for RAID 5, which can survive the loss of one drive, though four drives is a more common NAS system configuration. Five drives allow for RAID 6, which can survive the loss of two drives.

Can I move hard drives from one Synology NAS to another?
You can’t transfer the drives to and from every type of NAS from Synology. For example, the NAS needs to belong to the same series, like the DS216+ and DS218+. Aside from this, transferring data doesn’t work with the models listed below.
Do I really need NAS drives?
If you are only using one device per person, I think an external hard drive is okay. However, in today’s multi-device per person environment, a NAS device is ABSOLUTELY A MUST! It protects your data and syncs your data from your devices so you have a copy.

As long as they are compatible, yes. If they’re the same size and speed, even better. It would go off the slowest and smallest if they were different sizes. Keep in mind though, that even if they are the same size, different brands will still have varying degrees of available space.
Can I move the HDD and keep the data from NAS to another NAS?
The easiest way to migrate from one Synology NAS to another is by swapping the hard drives. It’s possible to remove the drives from one NAS and simply insert them into another. The DSM OS (see our DSM 7 review) will be able to detect the migration process and commence the switch.

Can you RAID two different hard drives?
In theory it is possible but we recommend using same model hard drives (with identical firmware) throughout the system for performance and disk utilization concerns.
