How do I use my Berkey water filter for the first time?
When filling your Berkey for the first time, we recommend filling it completely and discarding the first batch of water. This is to ensure that there is no residual dust left in the filter after priming. After the first batch, we advise filling your Berkey up fully everytime you refill it.

Can I drink first batch of Berkey water?
It’s recommended that you discard the first 2 or 3 batches of water. When the lower chamber is partially full, be cautious not to overfill the upper chamber as this could cause the lower chamber to overflow.
Should I use 2 or 4 Berkey filters?
You would need to add 2 addt’l Black Berkey filters. More Filters = Faster filtration; not better filtering. If you’re buying a larger system, you most likely have a requirement for water to be available quicker and in larger volumes. In this case, you would want to opt for 4, 6, or 8 upper chamber filter elements.
Do Berkey filters need to stay wet?
As mentioned above the Fluoride Filters, need to remain wet. If you are traveling away from your Berkey System with Fluoride Filters, you will need someone to run water through your refrigerated Fluoride Filters, every 14 days, as if they were in normal use in order to keep them wet.
Do I have to fill my Berkey every day?
So generally, you want to fill daily, keeping them wet and moist. If you will be traveling or putting it away, you want to scrub the filters and then let them dry thoroughly. This will really extend the life of your filters and keep them working well for you.
Why is my Berkey not filtering all the water?
If you recently purchased your Berkey System and water is passing through the filters very slowly, or not at all, the problem is typically due to high water tension. High water tension prevents air from being purged from the micro pores of the new purification elements.
How often should I clean my Berkey?
Because of the effects water deposits and contaminants have on your unit it is necessary to clean your unit on a regular basis. We recommend cleaning your Berkey stainless steel chambers monthly, and the Black Berkey Purification elements every six months or as filtration speed slows.
