What is an L Blend?
‘L’ blends are consonant blends where the second letter is ‘l’. There are six different ‘l’ blends, and these are bl, cl, fl, pl, gl and sl. There are many examples of common ‘l’ blend words including ‘blue’, ‘clay’, ‘plan’ and ‘slide’. Children will learn about the ‘l’ blend during phonics.
How can I help my child say the L sound?
1. To teach the /l/ sound place the tongue tip on the alveolar ridge (the ridge behind the front teeth). To help your child do this touch your child’s alveolar ridge with your finger or a lollipop. Then ask your child to place his tongue tip there.

Words include: flower, plate, plant, planet, plane, claw, clap, clam, cloud, clock, clown, flame, fly, flag, flash, flying, flute, flour, blonde, blackboard, blizzard, blanket, black, blue, slipper, sleeve, sled, sleep, slice, glasses, glove and glue.
