What router bit to use for templates?
A flush trim bit, like one shown in the photo above, is the perfect choice for templates designed to fit beneath the workpiece. With a bearing at the tip riding against the template, a flush trim bit levels the edge of the workpiece to match. This same combination works in a router table as well.

Router template guides fit into the base of your router and direct it along the edge of a template. They can be used to accurately rout the edge of your stock to a specific shape, to rout cavities and mortises, or even to accurately bore positioned holes.

Templates should be made of sturdy inexpensive material such as MDF. Some woodworkers prefer to use quality plywood with a reliable edge surface. The template material should be at least 1/4 inch thick to provide enough bearing surface, but no thicker than 3/8 inch.
How do I attach a template to wood?
I use 3M brand double-faced tape, but any good, thin double-faced tape should work. Do not use foam backed tape as it allows for too much movement between the pattern and the wood. Apply low-tack painter’s tape to the surface of the template as well as the wood, making sure they will mate fairly close.
What is the best material for router template?

In most cases, 1⁄ 4 ” tempered hardboard makes the best choice for template material. It’s inexpensive and easy to work with.
