When should I divide my clivia?

When should I divide my clivia?

Clivias can be divided, at most, every three years and the best time to divide them is after they have finished blooming in spring as this will allow the plant an entire year before the next flowering season.

Do clivias need to be divided?

Plant them about 30cm apart and so that roots are just under the soil. Add some slow-release fertiliser if needed and water in. Do this every three to four years, when the clumps are congested, and the best time is in early autumn. Clivias can be divided now too.

When can I transplant clivias?

Clivias should be transplanted during the second half of Spring to early Summer. I prefer to take remove single plants from the bunch rather than to divide the whole big cluster.

Can you trim the roots of a clivia?

Cut off any dead, damaged, or long dangly roots to about six or eight inches in length. Root pruning is a necessary part of replanting many bulbs. I have often replanted clivia when only three short roots were still attached to some of the smaller plants. They still did just fine and none died.

Do clivias like to be root bound?

Clivias love potbound living conditions and produce more blooms when the roots are crowded. They only need to be repotted every three to five years. You can safely repot your clivia from June through October, after the plant finishes flowering for the season.

Do clivia like to be crowded?

Clivias tolerate considerable crowding of their roots and bloom best, in fact, when pot-bound. As a plant grows, some of the fleshy roots may push their way up above the potting mix. This is normal. Repotting is necessary only every 3-5 years.

Should I remove clivia seeds?

Clivia seeds are borne in seed pods and must be removed from it at the right time, so that they won’t germinate, or will germinate into week seedlings.

Can clivia grow without roots?

Left alone, these rootless plants seem inevitably to die. The method that seems to yield the best results in getting rootless clivia plants to regrow new roots appears to be simply putting the rootless plant into a glass of water. If there is rotted or dying tissue around the base of the plant, this should be removed.

How far apart should clivias be planted?

Clivias generally grow to about 30cm in width, so spacing your seedlings 30cm apart should be sufficient.
