The denim in not prewashed or prepared in any way, so they are rigid. Washing them 3 times, inside out, before wearing them will get rid of some of the dye and will loosen them up a bit. You should also NOT machine dry them for the first few washes. Just put them on and do deep-knee bends to help stretch them.
