What is a Rethread kit?

Thread repair kids allow damaged threads in a hole to be removed and replaced with new threads of the same size. They may also be used to provide strong threads in soft materials such as aluminum. A thread repair kit consists of a tapping tool, an insertion tool and some thread inserts.

How does a Rethreader work?

The shaft of the rethreader is made from an extremely hard steel, which can alter the threads in the hole. As the thread passes a damaged area, the sharp edge between the flute and thread initiates the repair by pushing the thread back into its correct position.

Can I chase threads with a tap?

Standard taps are actually designed to cut new threads rather than chase existing ones. Every time you use a standard tap to chase a set of head bolt threads, for example, the tap will also remove more of the existing threads. This reduces the overlap of the female threads in the block to the male threads on the bolt.

Use a rethreading tap to restore threads on nuts or threaded engine component holes. Don’t try to rethread the entire bolt, hole or nut in one operation. Insert the rethreading tap or die and rotate a few turns, then back it off a full turn. That will dislodge the debris from the teeth.
