Which way up do shocks go?
The correct way to mount it is as shown with the boot down and the label facing so it is not upside down. So, If you are not sure which way is up on your shocks or wonder if you can mount them either way, always look at the Bilstein logo. If it is upside down, so are your shocks!
Does it matter which way you install shocks?
Bilstein does have some shocks that do have the boot on the bottom of the shock and the same size mounting eyes on each end. As a general rule with all Bilstein shocks, you should pay attention to the label. Bilstein tech advises that you should always mount your shocks so that the Bilstein logo is right-side up.
Can you install shock absorbers upside down?
Some people say that monotube or gas pressurize shocks can be mounted upside down, however in time they will develop and extra inch or more of piston travel that has little to no dampening effect whatsoever. Ultimately: don’t mount shocks upside down just because it looks cool.
Is there a top and bottom for shocks?
The outer tube is used to store excess fluid. The upper mount of the shock absorber connects to the vehicle frame. This upper mount is called the piston rod, and at the bottom is the piston. Notice that this piston rod passes through a bushing and a seal at the upper end of the pressure tube.
Will shock absorbers work upside down?
The difference is that a mono-tube shock absorber can be mounted upside down or right side up and it will work either way. *NOTE A conventional two-tube shock absorber must be mounted somewhat vertically.
Can you compress shocks by hand?
You cannot judge the strength or condition of a shock/strut by hand movement alone. The force and speed generated by a vehicle in operation exceeds what you can accomplish by hand. The fluid valves are calibrated to operate differently depending on the degree of movement inertia which cannot be duplicated by hand.
How good are Gabriel Ultra shocks?
These are certainly worth the money, as they are the best shocks I have ever installed. As for the front struts, I installed the Gabriel G57022 ReadyMount Complete Strut Assembly and the combination of these with the shocks has completely restored the ride of my vehicle to like-new condition.
Can you install a shock upside down?
No. With the exception of a few specialty shocks, you should never mount your shock absorbers upside down. Typical twin-tube shocks are simply not designed to function upside down for many important reasons.
Do you need to prime shocks before installing?
Yes. Since most shock absorbers are stored on their side prior to installation, priming the unit before the installation is recommended. To prime the unit, you should hold it up-right and vertical, then cycle the unit by fully compressing and extending the unit 2 to 3 times.
How tight do you tighten shocks?
The fasteners should be tightened until the bushing expands (bulges) to the same outside diameter of the metal washer. (see below) This allows for the proper amount of bushing squeeze so that the shock absorber can move properly in any direction.
Can I change shocks myself?
If you need to replace your car’s shock absorbers but don’t want to pay an expensive mechanic’s fee, you can do so on your own with a little effort. Shocks are essential to a car’s performance, giving it a smooth and even ride. Over time, however, the vehicle’s suspensions become worn out.
Do you have to compress shocks before installing?
Although not required, the shock can be “primed” before installation: Hold the shock vertical (normal installation position) and then stroke the shock to fully compress it and then fully extended it several times.
How long do Gabriel Ultra shocks last?
For maximum driver safety, comfort, and control, Gabriel® recommends that you have your shocks or struts replaced every 50,000 miles.
