The UC schools will be looking for students who can make meaningful contributions to their campuses. In your essay, you should showcase that you’re an individual who isn’t afraid to step up, involve others, and work to improve a part of the community you describe.

We ask many questions as part of the application process so that we can get to know each student.

Focus your writing on personal growth and how the experience changed you as a person. The question asks you to address what you’ve done to improve your situation, and also has an academic component. Consider your challenge in the context of your academic experience to fully answer this personal insight question.
Are the UC essays the same every year?
For the first time in about 10 years, the UC (University of California) college essay questions have changed! They are both longer and shorter now. Shorter because each individual essay is much shorter now in terms of word count.
What are UCs looking for?
UCs do look at courses you take in freshman year and the rigor/grades in context of your overall schedule/grade trend (so you should provide an explanation if there are anomalies in your schedule or grades); but freshman grades are NOT included in the GPA calculation used for admission evaluation.
Do UC’s accept C’s?
Very often the UCs accept a C grade; in fact, I might say more often than not the odds are in your favor — but not always. And if they don’t accept the C, it usually revolves around one of the aforementioned items.
Do UC essays have to be 350 words?
Some colleges require long essays; some don’t require them at all. The University of California requires you to respond to four out of eight Personal Insight Questions, and you have a maximum of 350 words for each. Fear not, though: These are great opportunities to express yourself.
