How do you decode mid-side recording?
Decoding. MS decoding requires what is called a “sum-and-difference matrix”. To get the sum you add one side signal to the mid signal, and to get the difference you subtract the other side signal from the mid signal by shifting its polarity 180º. It’s easier to do than it sounds.
What is a mid-side encoder?
Mid-side processing works by adding and subtracting signals, and altering phase, to encode the left and right channels. This used to require a hardware encoder and decoder or using a bunch of mixer buses and a mixer channel’s ability to change phase.

The “Mid” microphone is set up facing the center of the sound source. Typically, this mic would be a cardioid or hypercardioid pattern (although some variations of the technique use an omni or figure-8 pattern). The “Side” mic must be a figure-8 pattern. This mic is aimed 90 degrees off-axis from the sound source.

ORTF is a common stereo mic technique. Stereo recording uses two microphones to capture a single sound source; each mic then gets panned to either side of the stereo field. Over the years, engineers have developed tried and true methods of stereo recording that best mimic how our ears perceive sound.

For example, use the mid and side channels to keep your kick and snare centered while adding width to only the percussion. Is Mid Side mono compatible?
Another great benefit of M/S miking is that it provides true mono compatibility. Since the two Side channels cancel each other out when you switch the mix to mono, only the center Mid channel remains, giving you a perfect monaural signal.
