What is dark wax?

Dark wax is essentially just clear wax with a colorant added. The reason for using clear first is to create a bit of a barrier so too much of the stain doesn’t absorb into the paint. It makes it a bit easier to control the dark wax too.

Do you apply clear wax before dark wax?

The initial layer of Clear Wax first will also prevent the Dark Wax from “staining” the paint color. So, let the Clear Wax dry first, and then apply the Dark Wax. This will also allow you to have better control over your toning layer or antiquing effect.

What is milky paint?

Milk paint is usually formulated from milk protein (casein) and lime (calcium carbonate), plus pigments for color and a bit of borax (sodium borate) as a preservative. A bonding agent may also be added to enhance adherence.

What is antique wax?

Antiquing Wax will give your piece an old-fashioned vintage look while providing light protection. Use a tinted wax if you want to highlight accent areas or add depth to the color of your piece. Antiquing Wax will settle into the crevices and detailing of your furniture to give it that aged appearance.

Do you buff between coats of wax?

Once you apply the wax with the round brush, then go back and rub it in and off the surface of the paint with a soft t-shirt rag. The wax needs to be wiped into the paint and then you let it dry. Then you go back and buff with a soft t-shirt fabric.

Do I distress or wax first?

It is a much cleaner process! Wax tends to hold in the dust from the sanding itself keeping an extremely limited amount of free-floating particulates in the air that would otherwise be all over the place if you distressed before you waxed. You have much more control over your distressing by doing it after you wax.

Should you sand chalk paint before waxing?

Sanding Before Waxing If you sand after applying your chalk paint and before you wax – it is physically easier since you are only sanding through paint. Â If you get too carried away with distressing your piece you can easily do touch ups (or repaint the whole thing) with chalk paint.
