Why is it called chasco?
It is based on the fictional legend of Queen Chasco and King Pithla, a Spanish boy and girl who are captured by Calusa Indians – borrowing their names from the Pithlachascotee River that winds through New Port Richey. Known to locals as simply “Chasco”, the event extends across two weekends in March.
What is the Chasco Fiesta parade?
This 10-day celebration held each March in New Port Richey honors Native American tribes and traditions. Named for Queen Chasco of the Calusas, it features an Indian powwow and pageant, river and street parades, a king and queen coronation ceremony, a ball, a carnival, arts and crafts, musical entertainment, and food.
