The Panamint Valley is a long basin located east of the Argus and Slate ranges, and west of the Panamint Range in the northeastern reach of the Mojave Desert, in eastern California, United States.
How was the Panamint Range formed?
A type of fault activity called block faulting, in which the movement is predominantly vertical, began to form the valley about 30 million years ago. As crustal blocks sank, they formed the great trough of the valley, and other blocks were uplifted to gradually form the adjacent mountain ranges.

A flash flood completely destroyed the town in 1876, yet Panamint City carried on mining in some capacity until 1983, when another flash flood washed out the rugged road built up Surprise Canyon. This led to the abandonment of the town altogether.

The town is located on the Titus Canyon road. This is a one way high clearance unpaved road that sometimes requires 4-wheel drive. Panamint City was called the toughest, rawest, most hard-boiled little hellhole that ever passed for a civilized town.
