What is nodule of Arantius?
The eponymic nodules (or nodes) of Arantius are thickenings of the tunica intima layer covering the ventricular aspect of the leaflets of the aortic valve, also known as the ventricularis layer (see blue arrows in the accompanying image). The thickening happens at the point of coaptation of all three leaflets.
Where are the nodules of Arantius located?
At the center of each free edge is a small fibrous bulge named the nodule of Arantius. These nodules are located at the contact site of valve cusp closure. The rim of each valve cusp is slightly thicker than the cusp body and is known as the lunula.
What is a nodule on the aorta?
Aortic aneurysm and aortic dissection An aortic aneurysm is a bulge that occurs in the wall of the major blood vessel (aorta) that carries blood from the heart to the body. Aortic aneurysms can occur anywhere in the aorta and may be tube-shaped (fusiform) or round (saccular).
What causes aortic root dilation?
Progressive dilatation of the aortic root is caused by medial degeneration and destruction of the elastic and collagen fibers and can be also associated with high blood pressure, high stroke volume, and inflammatory diseases [14–17].
What is non coronary sinus?
The left posterior aortic sinus gives rise to the left coronary artery. The anterior aortic sinus gives rise to the right coronary artery. The right posterior aortic sinus usually gives rise to no vessels, and is often known as the non-coronary sinus.
Is aortic root the same as aortic sinus?
The spaces between the luminal surface of the three bulges on the aortic root and their respective valvar leaflets are known as the aortic sinuses of Valsalva. Davies considered the wall of the aortic root the aortic sleeve, distinguishing it from the aortic wall on account of its histological compo- sition.
How often do you echo a bicuspid aortic valve?
Echocardiographic evaluation of valvular function, ventricular dimensions and function, and diameter of the aortic root and ascending aorta should be performed in every patient with bicuspid aortic valve. If initial imaging is normal and there is no aortic dilation, imaging should be repeated every 5 to 10 years.
Is aortic sinus and coronary sinus same?
What is a normal aortic root size?
The normal range of aortic root diameters in this group was 17 to 33 mm (mean 23.7). A significant difference (P is smaller than 0.001) in aortic root diameters existed between men and women which could not be explained by differences in body surface area.
Is aortic root part of the heart?
The aortic root is connected to the heart. The aortic root is a complex structure that contains the aortic valve and the origins of the left and right coronary arteries. Normal function of the aortic valve can be altered by changes in the size and shape of the aortic root.
