Can you use a smart thermostat with electric heat?

Can you use a smart thermostat with electric heat?

Yes, there are smart thermostats that work with electric baseboard heaters. However, not all smart thermostats do. So, it’s important to choose a smart upgrade that’s compatible with your home. For baseboard heaters, you’ll need a line voltage smart thermostat.

Do you need a special thermostat for electric heat?

Make sure you buy a high-voltage thermostat designed for electric baseboard heat. Thermostats for electric-baseboard heaters operate at the same voltage as the heater—usually 240 volts. Low-voltage thermostats designed for gas, oil, or heat pumps won’t work and are extremely dangerous on a high-voltage system.

Does Nest thermostat work with electric baseboard heaters?

Electric baseboard systems are generally not compatible with Nest thermostats. They are only compatible if they’re currently controlled by a 24 V thermostat.

Can you use any thermostat with baseboard heaters?

Most of the popular thermostat models (like Nest, Ecobee, and Emerson Sensi) are incompatible to be used as an electric baseboard heater thermostat (they’re designed for low voltage heating/cooling systems).

Can ecobee control electric heat?

This is because Nest and ecobee thermostats are not compatible with electric heating systems. Nest and ecobee are low voltage thermostats. Low voltage thermostats are designed to control central heating systems like a gas furnace or hot water boiler. These thermostats can usually handle up to 24V of power.

Can you use nest with electric radiators?

Both Nest Thermostat E and 3rd-gen Nest Learning Thermostat are compatible with fil pilote electric radiators, but installation will be a little different depending on whether you have a fil pilote thermostat and what thermostat you’re installing.

How do you hook up a thermostat to an electric radiator?

Connect the two cable wires from the main panel to the wall heater thermostat’s “line” wires (they’ll be marked). Connect the two wires from the heater to the “load” wires on the thermostat. Connect the two bare ground wires. Fold the wires into the box, slide the thermostat in and secure with the two mounting screws.
