Ping and traceroute are common commands you can use to troubleshoot network problems. Ping is a simple command that can test the reachability of a device on the network. Traceroute is a command you use to ‘trace’ the route that a packet takes when traveling to its destination.

Why is traceroute more specific than ping?

A traceroute readout typically will display three separate columns for the hop time, as each traceroute sends out three separate packets of information to each computer. At the very top of the list, the traceroute will give the limit of how many lines of hops it will display—30 hops is often the maximum number.

What does a result of * * * mean during a traceroute?

A hop that outputs * * * means that the router at that hop doesn’t respond to the type of packet you were using for the traceroute (by default it’s UDP on Unix-like and ICMP on Windows).

Is a higher ping better?

Lower ping is better than high ping, because low ping means less lag. And less lag means smoother gameplay. On the flip, high ping means a longer lag. It also means you probably have a poor internet connection speed.
