Does Queensland have an Ombudsman?

The Queensland Ombudsman independently reviews the actions of Queensland Government agencies, local government decisions and some universities. You can read their tips for complaining to the organisation involved.

What does the Ombudsman cover?

There are two types of ombudsman. Some cover the private sector – they handle financial and consumer complaints. Some cover the public sector – they mainly look into complaints about government organisations and public services. Most ombudsmen are members of the Ombudsman Association.

What does the Qld Ombudsman do?

We investigate complaints about the actions and decisions of state government departments and agencies (including state schools and TAFE), local councils and public universities. Our complaints assessment and investigation service is free and independent.

When can I go to the Ombudsman?

When can I take my case to the Ombudsman? You must have raised the issue with the company at least eight weeks prior. After this, you can escalate the issue to the relevant ombudsman.

Is the Ombudsman decision final?

The ombudsman will issue their final decision to both parties in writing. You will then be asked to confirm by a specified date whether you accept or reject it.

How long does an ombudsman investigation take?

Typically, this part of our process takes up to 90 days. A complex complaint, or where either party disagrees with the initial assessment and asks for final decision, may mean it takes longer. You will be updated by your case handler as things progress.
