Are oil catch cans a gimmick?
The answer is yes. While a catch can won’t stop every last particle of contaminant from entering the intake manifold and coating the valves in a direct-injection engine, the less unwanted buildup the better.
What does a AOS do?
This secondary combustion (that should not be there) is the “knock” that can destroy an engine. The AOS helps to reduce blowby, creating a cleaner system and delivers oil back into the intake manifold and out of your combustion chamber.
Why is my oil catch can filling up so fast?
Some areas move more oil than others. For instance, on an LS engine (both Gen 3 and Gen 4) the valley area are particularly high oil movement areas. If you put a fitting here for PCV to a catch can you will surely fill up the catch can with a quickness, even with baffling its higher than most other locations.

At idle the intake is under vacuum, pulling that crap out of the motor. However once you have boost, the intake is under pressure ramming that air into the motor. The check valve prevents this backward pressure into the catch can. You need the check valve.

Even if your vehicle is otherwise stock, and AOS can greatly improve performance and economy over time. They work well when installed correctly, it’s the right product for your engine.
