How do you test for DGI?
How is DGI diagnosed? Your doctor will check to see whether you have gonorrhea or symptoms of DGI. To test for gonorrhea, your doctor will take a sample or culture from the affected area. They will then send the sample to a lab where it’s analyzed for the presence of gonorrhea bacteria.
How do you treat DGI?
Patients with DGI should be treated for at least 1 week with IV ceftriaxone (8). Treatment duration should be extended in patients who do not improve adequately. Rash associated with DGI disappears after 4–5 days without treatment.
What does DGI look like?
It commonly manifests as rash, tenosynovitis, and polyarthralgia, but it can also present as an isolated rash and tenosynovitis without polyarthralgia. DGI can be present in the absence of urogenital, rectal, or pharyngeal infection (2).
How common is DGI?
DGI occurs when the sexually transmitted pathogen Neisseria gonorrhoeae invades the bloodstream and travels to distant sites of the body. DGI is rare – occurring in just 0.5-3 percent of untreated gonococcal infections – but carries a risk of serious complications, potentially including death.
Can doxycycline treat DGI?
If chlamydial infection has not been excluded, providers should treat for chlamydia with doxycycline 100 mg orally 2 times/day for 7 days.

Untreated gonorrhea can cause serious and permanent health problems in both women and men. In women, gonorrhea can spread into the uterus or fallopian tubes and cause pelvic inflammatory disease (PID). The symptoms may be quite mild or can be very severe and can include abdominal pain and fever 13.
