Is StudyLink a government agency?
StudyLink is the government department which manages student loans and allowances for tertiary students in New Zealand.
Does StudyLink back pay?
If you apply after your course starts, you’ll get a back payment to when you submitted your application. You’ll get paid weekly.
How long does StudyLink take to process?
If you’ve recently sent us documents, your application status won’t change until we’ve processed them, which usually takes up to 5 working days. This may take longer during our busier periods, eg, the start and end of the school year. You can also check in MyStudyLink if we’ve received your documents.

When was StudyLink established?

Is StudyLink part of MSD?
Student Loan Three agencies have particular responsibilities under the scheme: StudyLink, a service of the Ministry of Social Development, is responsible for the administration and delivery of Student Loans.
Is Studylink interest free?
The Student Loan is interest free if you stay in New Zealand. If you don’t make your payments on time, you may be charged late payment interest.

You can get a Student Loan for up to 2 EFTS of study a year (this is around 240 points or credits).
Is student allowance an income tested benefit NZ?
Income-tested benefits, Student Allowance and New Zealand superannuation (NZ Super) are taxable income. This means tax is deducted by the Ministry of Social Development (MSD) before they pay you. The income will also be included: in your end of year income tax assessment or IR3 tax return.

Can I pay my student loan in full?
Yes, you can pay your student loan in full at any time. If you are financially able to do so, it may make sense for you to pay off your student loans early. Lenders typically call this “prepayment in full.” Generally, there are no penalties involved in paying off your student loans early.
How many hours can I work as a full time student?
If you are studying on a degree level programme and have the standard Student or Tier 4 immigration permission work restriction, you can work up to 20 hours in any one week during term-time, (or 10 hours a week for certain programmes[*]).
Can I work full time and study full time?
Don’t worry – it’s actually totally possible to work and study at the same time and still have a life too!
