Can you stain wood cabinets grey?
Toning wood is very common as I typically say you can always go darker but not always lighter. I tested out an old cabinet down and with some color manipulating I was able to achieve the perfect grey!
Is it better to gel stain or paint cabinets?
If you want to cover the wood grain, knots, or scratches, paint is the way to go. It will hide all character features on the wood. Paint is also harder to touch up then stains. Paint touch ups can be tricky, but are easier with painted brushed finishes.
Is gel stain better than paint for cabinets?
Like paint, most surfaces don’t absorb gel stain. In comparison to paint, gel stain: Hides application mistakes better. Absorbs evenly across porous and non-porous spots.
Do I have to sand before using gel stain?
When it comes to application, gel stain requires less preparation in advance than regular stains and paints. It doesn’t require you to sand the wood all the way down to its raw state for best adhesion the way you would with a typical stain.
Can you put gray stain over brown stain?
Yes! Staining on top of older stain is perfectly fine. You will need to understand your specific project and plan before you begin but staining on top of old stain is fairly simple. As we mentioned earlier, staining on top of old stain works best if you want a darker stain.
Is there a grey stain for wood?
If you’re looking for more of a true grey wood stain, Willow Gray is probably your best option. Not too dark and not too light, this gray color is just right.

The high urethane content of General Finishes Gel Stains results in a lustrous finish that tends to fool people into assuming no sealant is required. The beauty of Gel Stain comes from the thick urethane which can carry a LOT of color to any surface, but that color must be sealed in with top coat.
