Marbling is one of our favorite art activities and we’ve done it many ways and many times over the years. We’ve marbled paper with all kinds of paints from watercolors, tempera, acrylics, and even food coloring.

Water color paper works well for marbling, as well as thick printing papers. Any paper that is unsized and can withstand submersion in water will make excellent marbling paper. Thin but strong papers like Hosho rice paper can also be used.

Mix Medium Viscosity Concentrated Artist Colors with Marble Ease and a small amount of distilled water, to the consistency of light cream. If paint is too thick it will sink; if too thin it will spread out quickly and become transparent. Marble Ease should be added directly to the paint.

When you’re looking for a paper to marble, it should generally be an absorbent, lightly sized, uncoated stock. This may be a drawing, printmaking, or sketch paper. I’ve found that alpha cellulose, cotton, and recycled fibers tend to work well because they are absorbent but have decent wet strength.
