Sykes Hot Springs is along the Pine Ridge Trail, which is a popular trail in Los Padres National Forest, near Big Sur California. Los Padres is about 2.5 hours south of San Francisco. The trailhead is at Big Sur Station, which is directly off of Highway 1 and very easy to find.
Do you need a permit for Sykes Hot Springs?
Please complete a voluntary self-registration permit at the trailhead at Big Sur Station. Prior to the wildfire/winter storm closure, Sykes Camp was overused by visitors due to the presence of natural hot springs that were impounded into tubs.

Skyline-to-the-Sea Trail is currently closed due to damage caused by the CZU Lightning Complex Fires until further notice. Sempervirens Fund is working with California State Parks to help support the immediate and long-term needs of the Park.

Is Big Sur accessible right now?
Highway 1 remains fully accessible from the Monterey Peninsula to San Simeon. Nacimiento-Fergusson Road, South Coast Ridge Road, Central Coast Ridge Road/Cone Peak Road, remain closed for repairs.
Can you visit Big Basin right now?
Visitors will be able to explore the Redwood Loop, Dool Trail and some access roads near the historic park core. Due to ongoing safety concerns following the devastating CZU Fire in August 2020, the majority of Big Basin remains closed to the public.
Do you need bear canister in Big Sur?
Parking at the trailhead costs $10 per calendar day. In the backcountry, bear canisters are not required (we hung our food) and there are pit latrines at each of the campsites (luxury!). Resources: Stop by the Big Sur Station to ask the staff about current conditions.

Original story: Highway 1 in Big Sur is closed because of multiple rock slides from ongoing rain. The closure of Highway 1 is between Ragged Point in San Luis Obispo County and near Deetjen’s Big Sur Inn in Monterey County. There, emergency rockfall and debris removal will take place.
