What does a Fabry-Perot Etalon do?
Etalons are optical components based on the principle of the Fabry-Perot Interferometer. They are effective narrowband filters, transmitting only light of specific, periodic frequencies with tight bandwidths. They are commonly used in applications such as telecommunications, lasers and spectroscopy.
What is Fabry-Perot interferometer used for?
Applications. A typical application of a Fabry–Pérot interferometer is to check whether a laser operates on a single resonator mode or on multiple modes. High-finesse Fabry–Pérot interferometers are also used as reference cavities and for spectral analysis.
What is the difference between Michelson and Fabry-Perot interferometer?
With a Fabry-Perot etalon we observe the interference pattern formed by light that is transmitted through two partially reflecting mirrors, while with a Michelson interferometer we observe the interference pattern formed by reflected light.
Why the fringes are straight?
In a wedge-shaped film, each fringe is the locus of points of equal thickness of the film. For wedge shape air film, the locus of points of equal thickness is straight lines parallel to the edge of the wedge. So, fringes appear straight and parallel.
Why is central ring dark?
The central fringe in Newton’s rings is dark in the case of the reflected system because the air film thickness formed at the centre between the glass plate and the lens is zero. Hence, at the geometrical path difference between the incident and reflected rays from the glass plate is zero.
Why are fringes circular?
4.In a newtons ring set up the air film is enclosed below the convex lens. The thickness of the film is constant over a circle (or concentric circles) having center at the center of the lens. 5. Hence the fringes are circular.
Why central fringe is dark in Newton’s ring?
Why radius of plano convex lens is high?
iv)When a planoconvex lens of large radius of curvature is placed on a flat glass plate, a thin film of air is trapped between lens and plate. The thickness of the film is such that thickness is zero at the point of contact of lens and plate and gradually increases outwards.
Why central fringe is always bright?
s double slit experiment, the central fringe is always bright as the phase difference at centre is zero and thus intensity is maximum.
