What is a Glidebait?
For starters, a glide bait is typically a rather large, jointed swimbait that has a wide-sweeping, side-to-side action when reeled. So basically the bait glides left and right on a steady retrieve. Glide baits are used to mimic large baitfish like bream, herring, perch, and gizzard shad.
What is a bull Gill?
The Bull Gill is a multi-segmented hard swimbait made to mimic panfish that bass will feed on across the country. While some bodies of water don’t have shad, most will have bluegill or some other panfish that can be a source of food for larger bass.
When should you use a glide bait?
I will say that glide baits can be used throughout most of the year. Again, this is a bait that doesn’t typically get a lot of bites, but for anglers simply interested in getting big bites, this is a great bait to throw throughout the year to draw one or two monsters a trip.
When should you throw a hard swimbait?
There’s really not a bad time to throw a swimbait. It can be a good way to go after one big bite when you need it in tournament bass fishing. We like to throw them on days that have some windy and partly cloudy skies. We don’t like really bright or really dark days necessarily.
What fish are attracted to shad bait?
You could probably catch just about any fish that swims with this simple, inexpensive lure. This set-up will land crappies, pike, bluegills, muskies, pickerel, walleyes, smallmouths, largemouths, trout, catfish, steelhead, salmon, white perch, yellow perch, white bass, and catfish on them.
How deep does a glide bait go?
Glide baits can go as deep as 30 feet, but this usually requires adding weights to the glide bait in order to reach that depth fast enough. Most glide baits tend to sink slowly in the water, and so are best for fishing at depths between 3 and 15 feet.
What kind of rod do you use for glide baits?
For small to medium sized Glide Baits, a 7’6″ – 8′ Heavy or Extra Heavy swimbait rod will get the job done. When fishing magnum-sized Glide Baits, increase rod length and power. Typical of most treble hooked baits, a rod with a Moderate or parabolic bend will help you to keep the fish pinned.
