What is a mop sponge?
Sponge mops consist of a spongy head that usually has an attached wringer. They may have removable heads that allow for easier rinsing and replacement when necessary. Sponge mops are great for cleaning tile and other uneven surfaces.
How do you make a sponge mop?
Old tshirt or bed sheet. Make some tshirt yarn or cut strips from a cotton bed sheet and stretch the lengths of material so that it curls into yarn. Plait the yarn and then stitch it together in a size suitable for your mop. Stitch some lengths of yarn through the plaited pad to secure it to the mop.

Simply, wash the sponge and then run it through the dishwasher (top rack) with the drying cycle on. Alternatively, you can soak the sponge for one minute in a solution of 1/2 teaspoon of concentrated bleach to 1 quart of warm water. But it’s still a good idea to replace sponges often.

Aim for a replacement every two to three months or sooner if it looks very dirty. Your floors are only as clean as your mop head; a soiled and worn mop will not be effective.
Are sponge mops good?
Sponge mops have been around for quite awhile and are a good choice for linoleum floors (although I would just use a twist mop) but it’s really excellent for cleaning walls. The sponge can scrub well and reach high and scrub build up and stains, which is perfect for wall cleaning.
