Does tying flies save money?
Saving money tying is a myth. Even with the excess of flies I’ve tied, there’s no way I’ve saved a dime. I’ll grant the actual cost per fly based on materials alone, it’s cheaper to tie. But that doesn’t take into consideration the quantities of “stuff” you’ll purchase in order to fill your boxes.

When should you change flies?
It can be really difficult to decide when it’s time to change flies while you’re nymphing. Typically, if the fish haven’t given my flies any attention after 10 – 20 casts in the same spot, I will change things up. Another option is to move to a different location and try some casts there.
