NIH R21 Exploratory/Developmental Research Grant Emory postdocs can serve as the PI of an R21 grant, but successful funding of the R21 could disqualify you from applying for an F or K series award in the future.
What is the difference between R01 and R21?
R01 grants are the most common research funding mechanism for independent investigators and can provide a long period of support with a large amount of funding support. R03 and R21 grants provide smaller amounts of support and are designed for smaller, feasibility projects that do not require as much time or funding.

Postdoctoral researchers are not allowed to serve as PI or co-PI but they may serve as other personnel.
Who is eligible for r21?
Eligibility Requirements The PD/PI must be a U.S. citizen, permanent resident or valid U.S. visa holder. The PD/PI must be no more than 7 years beyond the date that the first professional, advanced professional, or terminal academic degree was awarded, whichever is most recent.
Can you resubmit an R21?
A “resubmission” or “renewal” application should normally have the same title as the previous grant or application. If the specific aims of the project have significantly changed, choose a new title. A “revision” application must have the same title as the currently funded grant.
