What do you fill weather balloons with?
Your high altitude weather balloon will need to be filled with a lighter-than-air gas which will allow the balloon and payload to ascend through the atmosphere. Typically, you’ll be using either helium or hydrogen.
Can foil balloons be filled with air instead of helium?
Mini balloons, latex and foil, can only be filled with air. They are too teeny tiny to take enough helium to make them float.
Which gas is used to inflate weather balloons?
Helium Gas Cylinder
Helium Gas Cylinder – You can rent one from many party and welding supply stores. High Altitude Science Inflation System – Our inflation system allows you to safely and easily transfer helium from your gas cylinder into your balloon.
Can you make helium with baking soda?
Pour two teaspoons of baking soda into your balloon, and pour half a cup of acetic acid into the bottle. Don’t add too much soda! Insert the bottleneck into the balloon’s neck and straighten the balloon: the baking soda in the balloon will fall into the bottle and meet the vinegar.
How do you make fake helium balloons?
First, fill the water bottle about 1/3 of the way full with white vinegar. Next, put baking soda into the un-inflated balloon, filling it about halfway. Ideally, you’d have a funnel handy for this process but, because I didn’t have one, I made one out of rolled-up construction paper and tape. It did the trick!
How do you make helium?
There is no chemical way of manufacturing helium, and the supplies we have originated in the very slow radioactive alpha decay that occurs in rocks. It costs around 10,000 times more to extract helium from air than it does from rocks and natural gas reserves. Helium is the second-lightest element in the Universe.
Can you make your own weather balloon?
Fill your balloon with hydrogen or helium gas. To make the weather balloon, use the nylon cord to attach the top of the parachute to the bottom of the balloon. The parachute will be used to deliver your equipment safely back to earth.
Can you launch your own weather balloon?
Yes, but only if you take the necessary precautions. Never launch a weather balloon in an area with congested air space and always coordinate your launch with the appropriate authorities.

How can I make helium at home?
The alpha particles that are emitted from the decaying atom bond with loose electrons underground, producing helium atoms. Currently, this natural process is the only method with which helium is produced on Earth. In other words: You cannot make your own helium!
