What is vocal scooping?
Recently, one of our readers posed a question about that particular vocal technique, commonly (and charmingly) known as “scooping”. When a singer scoops up to a note, it means they start making sound on a pitch that’s below the one they mean to sing. Pop singers do a similar thing, but usually with less vibrato.

How do I stop scooping notes?
Get in tune quickly on the “m” or “n”. Try to shorten the time it takes to tune up the “m”. Work your way to singing “ON the pitch” (no scoop) on the “m” or “n”. After you get rid of the scoop on the “m”, then try going straight to the open vowel (“ah” in the case of this example) in tune, ON the pitch.

A few things to highlight when doing a glissando are the following:
- Use your nails as much as possible and avoid your skin rubbing the keys.
- Be sure you are getting enough Vitamin D for your nail health.
- Go slow when learning.
- Repetition.
- Use the proper technique for going up and going down.
Do most people sing flat or sharp?
