Are astrocytomas rare?

Are astrocytomas rare?

General Discussion. Anaplastic astrocytoma is a rare malignant brain tumor. Astrocytomas are tumors that develop from certain star-shaped brain cells called astrocytes. Astrocytes and similar cells form tissue that surrounds and protects other nerve cells found within the brain and spinal cord.

Is grade 2 astrocytoma curable?

Grade 1 tumors are largely cured (96% survival rate at 5 years), usually by surgery only. Grade 2 tumors: Overall median survival is 8 years. Presence of IDH1 mutation is associated with longer survival. Grade 4 tumors: Median survival is 15 months.

What is the pathophysiology of astrocytomas of the spinal cord?

Pathology Astrocytomas (both intracranial and spinal) arise from astrocytic glial cells.  Spinal cord astrocytomas generally have a lower histologic grade than astrocytomas in the brain (see grading of astrocytomas):

Does astrocytoma have a cleavage plane?

In contrast to cord ependymomas, a cleavage plane is not present in most intramedullary spinal astrocytomas. High-grade tumors are more commonly associated with leptomeningeal spread, overall seen in up to 60% of spinal cord glioblastomas 5.

How many vertebral body segments are involved in astrocytoma?

Spinal astrocytomas usually span multiple segments in craniocaudal extent, with an average length of involvement of 4-7 vertebral body segments 5,7. Regarding their specific spinal location: involvement of thoracic cord (67%), followed by cervical cord (49%), are most common.

Is teleradiology a good first job for a radiologist?

Diverse case mix + ample support = great first job. Although never discussed in residency, teleradiology is a great fit for new radiologists. Real-time access to hundreds of on-shift radiologists for consults. Great case mix (over 60% CT) for sharpening your skills. Steady stream of interesting emergency radiology cases.
