The Gunner’s Cottage
The walk starts at The Gunner’s Cottage, which is the furthermost point you can drive to on the Mornington Peninsula (note, for those that need assistance, there is a hop-on-hop-off shuttle service that operates between 10.30am – 4pm that can take you all the way to Fort Nepean at the very tip of the Point Nepean).
Is Point Nepean open during Covid?
Pedestrians and cyclists can enter any time. The Point Nepean Information Centre is open daily, except Christmas day, 10am to 5pm. Gunners Cottage and selected buildings in the Quarantine Station are open for the public to explore from 9am – 4:30pm daily.

Why is there a military base at Point Nepean?
Located at the very end of the Mornington Peninsula, Fort Nepean was a critical part of Victoria’s defences from the 1880s until 1945. During the late 19th century the government decided that Victoria’s rich goldfields needed protection. Because of its strategic position, Fort Nepean became an important defence post.

We select the best tides, but you must be able to swim strongly even at the end of your swim when water movement can be significant.

The whole of Point Nepean is now open to the public. The roads and paths built over the years that lead to the various military posts and fortifications are now used by walkers and cyclists to access the tip of Point Nepean as well as the many beaches and vantage points in and around the point.
