What is CMT cancer?
Definition. Charcot-Marie-Tooth (CMT) disease is a group of inherited disorders. It affects movement and feeling in the arms and legs. The disease progresses slowly and causes harm to the nerves that control muscles and transmit sensation.
What is the difference between ALS and CMT?
Both ALS and CMT induce neurodegeneration. In ALS, both upper and lower neurons are degenerated, whereas only lower neurons are affected in CMT.
When do CMT symptoms start?
The main symptoms of CMT usually appear between the ages of 5 and 15, although they sometimes do not develop until well into middle age or later. Some of the main symptoms of CMT include: muscle weakness in the feet, ankles and legs at first.
Can CMT affect your hips?
CMT represents a heritable peripheral neuropathy that is associated with progressive motor disability and sensory loss [5, 7]. In addition to distal lower-extremity weakness, hip abductor and/or hip extensor weakness is present in a subgroup of patients affected by CMT [7, 16, 17, 27].
Can females have CMT?
X-linked diseases (like CMTX) cannot be passed from father to son. Autosomal inheritance means the mutation occurs on a chromosome other than the X or Y. Therefore, autosomal diseases affect males and females equally.
Where does ALS start?
ALS often starts in the hands, feet or limbs, and then spreads to other parts of your body. As the disease advances and nerve cells are destroyed, your muscles get weaker. This eventually affects chewing, swallowing, speaking and breathing.
Is tingling a symptom of ALS?
ALS doesn’t cause numbness, tingling, or loss of feeling.
Does CMT cause leg cramps?
Studies indicate that children with CMT1A have an increased frequency of calf cramps. Calf cramps worsen with age in both children and adults with CMT1A, and calf cramps are detrimental to overall QOL in CMT1A.
What is the blood test for CMT?
These tests, done by drawing a blood sample or capturing a saliva sample, are designed to detect the most common genetic defects known to cause CMT. Many, but certainly not all, of the genetic mutations underlying CMT can be detected with a DNA blood test.
