In 1953 Michael Bentine suddenly decided to quit. Spike heard from Sellers that Bentine had told him: “We don’t want Milligan – he hasn’t got any talent,” adding that he considered The Goon Show scripts “a load of rubbish”. His words stung Spike far more than they would a less vulnerable man.
