What are the properties of slag?
Steel slag aggregates are highly angular in shape and have rough surface texture. They have high bulk specific gravity and moderate water absorption (less than 3 percent)….User Guidelines for Waste and Byproduct Materials in Pavement Construction.

What does slag do in the blast furnace?
Granulated blast furnace slag has been used as a raw material for cement production and as an aggregate and insulating material. and granulated slag have also been used as sand blasting shot materials.
What are the characteristics of blast furnace?
Modern blast furnaces range in size from 20 to 110 metres (70 to 360 feet), have hearth diameters of 6 to 15 metres (20 to 50 feet), and can produce from 1,000 to about 15,000 tons of pig iron daily.
What is slag made of?
Slag is composed primarily of silica and lime, with concentrations of other minor constituents, including alumina, magnesia, and other compounds. During the fluxing process, slag removes the non-ferrous constituents from the molten iron, which purifies the product.
What is the use of slag?
Primary characteristics and applications of iron and steel slag
| Applications | ||
|---|---|---|
| Steelmaking slag | Converter slag, electric arc furnace slag | Base course material |
| Material for civil engineering works, ground improvement material (Material for sand compaction piles) | ||
| Raw material for cement clinker | ||
| Fertilizer and soil improvement |
How is slag formed in a blast furnace?
Blast furnace slag (BFS) is a by-product from iron production in blast furnaces, which are fed by a mixture of iron-ore, coke and limestone. In the process, the iron ore is reduced to iron while all remaining materials form the slag, which is tapped off as a molten liquid and cooled.
Is slag basic or acidic?
The basicity of the slag is normally fixed by the amount of lime and calcined dolomite added, the silicon and aluminum levels of the hot metal and steel scrap charged as well as ferro-alloys. The lower value of the ratio indicates that the slag is acidic and as the ratio increases the slag becomes more and more basic.
