A really fun way to reach Bear Island is by kayaking or canoeing from Hammocks Beach State Park with your own boat. You can also rent one from Paddle NC between mid-April and October at the park. Reservations are recommended and required if you’re seeking a guided tour.

How far is it to kayak to Bear Island?
The Bear Inlet Trail is 5.6 miles one way (Orange over White Blaze), runs from the kayak launch, and ends up at the island’s western side. The Bear Island Trail will take you 2.6 miles (White over Orange Blaze) from the kayak launch to the island’s campsites on the east side.
Can a bear swim in the ocean?
Bears are fantastic swimmers! Especially polar bears! Bears are very strong, naturally, and many bears are also very fat, which helps them stay afloat as they paddle along up and down rivers, across lakes, and even out in the ocean.
Can a regular wheelchair go in the sand?
Standard wheelchair wheels aren’t meant for sand and normally sink. This makes a fun beach day simply impossible. To keep from sinking, beach wheelchair wheels are very wide and large, increasing the surface area. Ideally, they also have good traction.
Is Ocean Beach wheelchair accessible?
The Ocean Beach promenade is generally accessible. During serve weather conditions areas of the promenade may become covered in sand. There are generally accessible restrooms located at the corner of Sloat and the Great Highway. Beach wheelchairs are available upon request.
