Was Dover Castle bombed?
The first bomb to be dropped on England fell near Dover Castle on Christmas Eve 1914. As a consequence of this regular shelling from warships and bombing from aeroplanes, Dover residents were forced to shelter in caves and dug-outs. The town became known as ‘Fortress Dover’ and was put under martial law.
Why are the cliffs white in Dover?
When the algae died, their remains sank to the bottom of the ocean and combined with the remains of other creatures to form the chalk that shapes the cliffs today. Over millions of years, the seabed became exposed and is now above sea level. The resulting edge of chalk is the iconic White Cliffs of Dover.
Is Dover safe at night?
The high street can be dodgy at night, so can Pencester Gardens, but you usually shouldn’t have too much trouble if you are in a group or are slightly older. Dover is a fairly rough town in general, but stick to the micropubs and the others I’ve listed and you’ll be fine.
