Why is my outboard not pumping water?

Why is my outboard not pumping water?

Turn the engine off and check for anything, such as weeds or trash, which may be blocking the water intake. If a foreign object is present, remove it and restart the engine after it has returned to normal temperature. In most outboard motors, the water output is a small tube-like structure that can easily get blocked.

What causes a boat water pump to fail?

If the water pump’s drive pulley is vibrating, the pulley bearings will wear and eventually fail. This reduces pump efficiency before eventually causing failure. Additionally, a wobbling drive pulley can cause the water pump’s impeller to become imbalanced. This will cause pump failure as well.

What are the symptoms of a water pump failure?

The most common symptom of a bad water pump is coolant leaks under your car together with an overheating engine. You can sometimes also hear a squealing noise coming from the water pump if the bearings are bad. Unstable engine temperature is also common.

What are the symptoms of a bad impeller?

If your impeller fails, the pump can’t pump cool water to the engine causing your engine to overheat. If you catch that your impeller is failing early on, you might avoid major problems.

What should I do if the Muffs fall off my Suzuki?

Turn the hose bib wide open and check to be sure the muffs are still on the water inlets, before you start the engine. Suzukis have the water inlets far enough forward on the lower unit that there is some danger of the muffs falling off the lower unit due to the water gushing around the muffs.
