How do you build a reflux still?
Building The Reflux Column of the Still
- Step 1 – Drill a 3/8 ” hole in the top of the 2″ end cap. Fit the rubber grommet and thermometer into the hole to make sure they fit.
- Step 2 – Place 3″ long piece of 2″ copper pipe into top of 2 x 2 x. 1 ½” tee and solder in place.
- Place Cap on top of 3″ copper pipe.
Can you make good whiskey with a reflux still?

Make sure you finish collecting the spirit before the temperature rises above 82C. Measure how fast the alcohol is coming out of the still.
Do you need to clear a sugar wash before distilling?
Simply ferment your wash and allow it to clear naturally or use a clearing agent to do so more quickly. I highly advise clearing the wash to reduce the risk of scorching material to the bottom of your kettle. Clearing is absolutely required when using internal heating elements to heat your still.
How many times should you distill rum?
You’ll want to run the rum wash through two separate distillations. During the first, you’ll collect the entire distillate without separating the heads, hearts and tails. That will be done during the second round of distillation. If using a condenser, turn on the water when the boiler reaches 130 °F.
