What is osteopenia caused by?

What is osteopenia caused by?

Some things can make bone loss happen more quickly, leading to osteopenia, such as: Medical conditions such as hyperthyroidism. Medications such as prednisone and some treatments for cancer, heartburn, high blood pressure and seizures. Hormonal changes during menopause.

What BMD means?

Low bone mineral density can occur in patients treated for cancer. Also called BMD, bone density, and bone mass.

What causes osteoporosis?

A lifelong lack of calcium plays a role in the development of osteoporosis. Low calcium intake contributes to diminished bone density, early bone loss and an increased risk of fractures. Eating disorders. Severely restricting food intake and being underweight weakens bone in both men and women.

Is increase in bone mineral density good?

The higher your bone mineral content, the denser your bones are. And the denser your bones, the stronger they generally are and the less likely they are to break.

What is normal range for BMD?

The T-score

Level Definition
Normal Bone density is within 1 SD (+1 or −1) of the young adult mean.
Low bone mass Bone density is between 1 and 2.5 SD below the young adult mean (−1 to −2.5 SD).
Osteoporosis Bone density is 2.5 SD or more below the young adult mean (−2.5 SD or lower).

What is a good BMD score?

As shown in the table below, a T-score between +1 and −1 is considered normal or healthy. A T-score between −1 and −2.5 indicates that you have low bone mass, although not low enough to be diagnosed with osteoporosis. A T-score of −2.5 or lower indicates that you have osteoporosis.

How do I read my BMD results?

The lower your score, the weaker your bones are:

  1. T-score of -1.0 or above = normal bone density.
  2. T-score between -1.0 and -2.5 = low bone density, or osteopenia.
  3. T-score of -2.5 or lower = osteoporosis.
